NAPOA is seeking nominations for the following awards:

Sheriff Harry Lee Leadership Award
This award is presented to individuals who represent the same outstanding leadership skills as Sheriff Harry Lee of Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. Sheriff Lee was first elected as Sheriff of Jefferson Parish in 1979, and has been re-elected for an unprecedented 6 consecutive terms (1983, 1987, 1991, 1995, 1999, 2003) Sheriff Lee was arguably the most visible Asian American law enforcement officer in the nation and demonstrated his outstanding leadership and dedication to the community. Sheriff Harry Lee passed away October 1, 2007, from Leukemia.

Chang Apana Award
This award is presented to individuals who represent the same dedication and determination as Detective Chang Apana. The famous Hollywood movie character Charlie Chan was based on the actual life and times of Detective Apana, who joined the Honolulu Police Department in 1898. Detective Apana was renowned for his energetic and fearless style as a detective, which resulted in a number of remarkable achievements. He retired in 1932 after serving 34 years as a Detective with the Honolulu Police Department. Detective Chang Apana passed away in 1933 and is buried at the Manoa Chinese Cemetery in Honolulu.

Milton Ng Award
This award is presented to individuals who represent the same distinguished services and commitment as Milton Ng. Milton joined the Bay Area Rapid Transit Police Department in 1972. In 1974, Milton was among a core group that founded the Northern California Asian Peace Officers’ Association and later served as President. In 1986, Milton was the President of the National Asian Peace Officers’ Association until 1993. He was instrumental in expanding and promoting NAPOA nation-wide through fraternal, business and community engagements. Unfortunately, health issues not only shortened his law enforcement career but also took his life as he passed away on October 4, 1998, from heart failure.

NAPOA President's Message...

I would like to personally thank the NAPOA Board, the Asian American Law Enforcement Association, the National Association of Asian American Law Enforcement Commanders, as well as the Chicago Police Department for supporting the 2012 NAPOA Leadership Conference. A special “Thank You” to all the sponsors, instructors, and attendees for making the NAPOA conference a great success. Also, congratulations to everyone recognized for their achievements at the Awards Banquet.

Our theme “Strength through Diversity” highlighted the importance of celebrating our differences and respecting each other. Generations before us have overcome great challenges and obstacles to create many more opportunities for others. NAPOA applauds the proud accomplishments made over the years. We have many more Asian and Pacific Islander Law Enforcement mentors to emulate and aspire to be like. Although majority of Law Enforcement agencies fall short of hiring and promoting Asian and Pacific Islanders, I believe efforts through NAPOA and charter Associations shall continue to educate and inform the significance of creating a diverse work force at every level of Law Enforcement to mirror the population we serve and protect each day.

Please join NAPOA at the 119th Annual International Association Chiefs of Police Conference and Law Enforcement Education and Technology Exposition in San Diego, California, from September 29 - October 3, 2012. NAPOA, NAAALEC, and the Pan Pacific Law Enforcement Association are participating in the exposition and hosting a reception for API Police Chiefs. Please stop by the NAPOA and NAAALEC table during the conference for more information.

NAPOA has partnered with the Law Enforcement Association of Asian Pacifics of Los Angeles (LEAAP), the California Asian Peace Officers Association (CAPOA), and the Asian Pacific Police Officers Association of Nevada (APPOA) to host the 2013 NAPOA Leadership and Training Symposium in Las Vegas on July 15-19, 2013 at the Planet Hollywood Resort. We are looking forward to 2013.

Respectfully,
Rudy Tai
